The origins of the sash window, or a window that is opened and closed by moving its panels up and down or side to side, date back to at least the seventeenth century. They’re most common in British and New England style architecture dating to around the twentieth century, but there are surviving examples that go back much further than that.

Modern manufacturing processes for wooden sash windows are now among the most automated of manufacturing processes. It has only been in the last century that mass production has had any impact on sash windows at all. Window sashes before the early part of the 20 Th century were cut by hand.

With wooden double hung windows, if the window weights are not working properly, the windows can be difficult to open or close. Most of the time a few sash cord repairs are all that are needed to get the windows working correctly again.

As a DIY Guide to painting and decorating sash windows, this should give you an idea that it is not difficult, but it will take some time and effort. Remove the lock on the window, which should have only two screws. Then take off any old sealants and putty with a putty knife. You will probably have to sand most of the wood for a smooth finish before you paint. After sanding, take a damp cloth and wipe the wood clean.

The first sash window known to have ever been built was used in English homes during the seventeenth century. Robert Hooke is the English scientist who created the traditional design. Usually, these windows are found on aged Victorian or Georgian styled buildings. Though centuries old and often seen on older homes, these windows are still being used in designs of newer homes. Wooden Sash windows have been around for a long time. Many of the existing windows today are in disrepair and it has become necessary to rebuild these windows to keep the integrity of the older homes. Fortunately, there is a way to create these windows much more easily than in the past. Some people may wonder what the origins of the sash window are. First of all, what are they? They are made up of panels of glass that can be moved, and are separated into panes. The glazed panels are referred to as sashes. Another name for them is also the hung sash.

The origins of the sash window are not easy to fathom. There are a variety of theories but no absolute proof for any of them. In the late 1600′s, an English inventor, Robert Hooke used them in Ham House and a painting by Vermeer called ‘The Milkmaid’ shows a sash frame behind the girl. It is believed that they might have come from France, via Holland to Britain around this time but the British certainly made them their own.
