We may never know who invented the sash window. Originally the belief was that they were invented in Holland in the late 1600′s. However, more recently it was determined that they were first built in England before the 17th century. Still another idea was that Britain created them during the mid 17th century.

With wooden double hung windows, if the window weights are not working properly, the windows can be difficult to open or close. Most of the time a few sash cord repairs are all that are needed to get the windows working correctly again.

Sash window history is fascinating for one interested in the progress of civilization. This brief article will only touch the highlights, as it is a subject that could almost fill a book. Developed with the idea of making a frame with glass panels, which could be opened, and operated with pulleys, springs and balances it was an instant success. Some of the older homes of the 18th century still have this type of window.

As a DIY Guide to painting and decorating sash windows, this should give you an idea that it is not difficult, but it will take some time and effort. Remove the lock on the window, which should have only two screws. Then take off any old sealants and putty with a putty knife. You will probably have to sand most of the wood for a smooth finish before you paint. After sanding, take a damp cloth and wipe the wood clean.

Sash windows are constructed in a way that the panels are movable. There are usually one or more panels that form the frame to hold the glass which are separated from the others by thin wooden bars. Double glazed sash windows are two panes of glass within the frame. When the panes are put together air or nontoxic gas is sealed between them.
