The origins of the sash window, or a window that is opened and closed by moving its panels up and down or side to side, date back to at least the seventeenth century. They’re most common in British and New England style architecture dating to around the twentieth century, but there are surviving examples that go back much further than that.

Using professionals to do certain jobs is very highly recommended. This is a great piece of advice when it comes to Windows, simplify the job with London window cleaners. The truth is, these people are professionals. It is how they earn a living, and therefore they know the ins and outs of the entire job. Not only can be easily quote you, they won’t leave unless you’re happy with the job they’ve done.

Modern manufacturing processes for wooden sash windows are now among the most automated of manufacturing processes. It has only been in the last century that mass production has had any impact on sash windows at all. Window sashes before the early part of the 20 Th century were cut by hand.

With wooden double hung windows, if the window weights are not working properly, the windows can be difficult to open or close. Most of the time a few sash cord repairs are all that are needed to get the windows working correctly again.

Sash windows will commonly be found on houses that are between 60 and 500 years old. These sorts of windows are defined by being usually very drafty within these older houses. As such the best thing that you can do is get sash windows that are double glazed. This will offer up several distinct advantages over the older windows that you had installed.

If you live in an older house with sash windows it’s sort of a mixed blessing. The windows may be beautiful and since they have been around for decades (or centuries) they are no doubt steeped in tradition and character. But they are also old and have probably lost some of their efficiency and functionality. With new advancements, however, it’s become amazingly easy to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing.
